The US manufacturer of battery electric trucks Xos Trucks and the Japanese truck manufacturer Hino will cooperate in equipping medium and heavy duty trucks with battery electric drive. This was announced by both companies in early October.

The California-based company Xos Trucks has so far specialized in the development and production of high-performance batteries for electrically powered commercial vehicles and – together with partner UPS – in the development and production of electric parcel trucks. Now a partnership with truck manufacturer Hino is expected to open the door to the medium and heavy-duty truck segment. Hino is the truck brand of the Toyota Group and, in addition to plants in Japan, operates production facilities in several Asian countries as well as in the USA, Canada and South America.

The cooperation initially envisages equipping Hino brand medium-heavy trucks. However, further cooperation in other segments is being considered. The X-Pack battery, developed by Xos Trucks and manufactured in-house from the cell to the ready-to-assemble package, consists of several modules and is intended to give the Hino 600 medium-heavy truck a range of around 320 kilometers.

As part of its zero-emission project, Hino is not only working on battery electric drives. At the same time, the company also wants to test drive solutions with fuel cells as an energy supplier. Here, Fuel cells developed by Toyota will be used.
